home about us meetings faqs rules/regs was brought into being in the uk in 1979, and is run by shihan alf burgoyne 8th dan, with the purpose of teaching self defense and developing strength of character lou she swan learn duae da (soft-style double man together fighting) what is swanda karate? swanda is an eclectic karate system which traces its roots back to china in 225 a.d. there, a chinese physician named hua t'o created a series of exercises based on animal movements. the warrior monks of the shaolin temple practiced the refined these movements of animals and elements, and called them the eighteen lo-han postures. the self-defence applications derived from those postures became known throughout china and asia as shaolin boxing. over the centuries, shaolin boxing split into hundreds of different boxing styles and influenced the development of every major fighting style in asia. over the years, through mishap or natural selection, many of these smaller styles were lost. swanda is one such small, family style which restricted its students and, as a result, was brought very nearly to extinction around the turn of the century. fortunately, circumstances delivered the swanda system from chinese hands into japanese hands and, finally, into american hands, but throughout its travels, the system has been carefully cherished and personally protected by its students and guardians. was officially brought into being in the uk in 1979, with schools in usa and great britain. club meetings everyone of any age is welcome to come along to club meetings, whether you’re a beginner, an experienced karateka, or someone returning to training after a break. has trained students for over 35 years providing martial arts classes to people of all ages. our classes offer an essential balance between traditional teachings of ancient techniques that date back hundreds of years, and the most up to date modern methods. this carefully balanced combination allows us to pass on the valuable secrets and traditions of ancient history as well as enable our students to be highly successful in the modern competition circuit. it allows us to be in the forefront of karate in the uk. you will train under the expert guidance of senior instructors. for children, karate usually has a ‘levelling effect’ on a child’s nature. an aggressive child will become more tolerant, yet still retain their great spirit, whereas a very subdued child will become more self-protective and outgoing. more importantly, each child develops an understanding of children with opposite natures to themselves, and thus can handle them appropriately with confidence. macclesfield club : the mykita building snape road hurdsfield industrial estate macclesfield cheshire sk10 2nz the training times are: seniors (age 12+ yrs) tuesdays: 7.30pm - 9.00pm juniors (age 6-12 yrs) tuesdays: 6.30pm - 7.30pm contact: alf burgoyne 8th dan email: [email protected] juniors: rob greaterix 1st dan bramhall club: bramhall club bramhall green scout hut linney road bramhall cheshire sk7 3jw the training times are: tuesdays & thursdays: 5.45pm - 6.45pm contact: instructors: shaun unsworth 5th dan and chantelle unsworth 6th dan email: [email protected] frequently asked questions below are listed some of the most often asked questions about the art of karate by beginners. 1. just what is karate? karate is a means of moulding personality. it is a physical and moral culture which is based upon a unique martial art. during the tokugawa era, this art was developed on the island known as okinawa. it is the most violent form of self-defence known to mankind. 2. what does the word "karate" mean? the word, "karate", is written in japanese as two words; "kara" (empty) and "te" (hand). 3. i want just a few lessons so that i can defend myself; should i take up karate? no. you cannot learn effective self-defence in a few lessons from karate or any other source. 4. how long will it take me to learn karate? the answer to this question will depend on you how hard you will study, how much you practice, and upon what ability you may have. at no time will you ever be able to say that you have learned karate, because there will always be room for improvement, even after thirty years of study and practice. 5. can i get hurt practising karate? no, not under the direction of a qualified instructor whose rules you obey. there is probably less injury in karate than in most other body contact sport. 6. will learning karate cost me a great deal of money? no. the karate club was established in order to teach karate at a reasonable cost for everyone. 7. is karate designed to kill people? no, it is designed to enable the practitioner to foil an attack upon himself or another person and to counter attack if necessary. a good karate man can deliver more punishment than any other kind of fighter, yet he has sufficient skill to deliver only as much punishment, if any, as the situation requires. 8. what are some of the benefits i would receive from karate practice? again, this will depend upon you how hard you practice and study, and how often you attend workouts. if you work hard, you will find that you will have more endurance, better poise, reaction time, confidence, strength, and agility, and you will also have developed for yourself one of the finest forms of unarmed self-defence known to man. 9. who can learn karate? almost anyone can learn within reason. there can be found in karate a curriculum which is suitable to both the very young whose bodies are not developed and to the elderly who wish to retain their flexibility. karate training is not only for men but also for women. 10. how often can i attend class and when may i enrol? classes are established in such a way that a person may enrol at any time. classes are held twice a week and students are encouraged to attend as many classes as possible. 11. will i have to compete with other students? no. students are enrolled to learn and to develop themselves as individuals, to compete with others will be up to you if you so desire. 12. can i wear glasses during training? you can wear them during training, but they must be removed for sparring. rules and regulations you will be expected to learn and uphold the following rules and regulations as a member of the association of great britain. it is also your responsibility to ensure that all your classmates do the same. remember – respect and courtesy are of the utmost importance while in the dojo as well as outside it. 1. no profanity or abusive language will be allowed in the dojo. 2. all members shall bow when entering or leaving the working area. 3. while in the dojo, the senior instructor should be addressed as sensei at all times. dan grade instructors below the level of 3rd dan should be addressed as sanpai. 4. all instructors should be acknowledged with a bow whenever explaining anything to you individually or the class as a whole. 5. no smoking in the dojo at any time by members or spectators. 6. do not wear rings, jewel, or any other metal ornaments in the work out area. 7. no gum chewing while in the class. 8. no talking or laughing at any time while a class is in session. 9. do not show anyone who is not a club member any karate techniques. 10. do not practice while intoxicated and do not consume any alcoholic beverages before a class or practice. 11. always be on time for class - to be late is an insult to your sensei. 12. keep yourself and your gi neat and clean at all times. 13. keep your finger and toe nails short and clean at all times. 14. do not criticise other members of your class. try to assist where possible, especially to those who are below you in rank and knowledge. 15. refrain from misusing your knowledge - stay out of fights unless it is impossible to avoid. 16. do not leave the work-out area without the permission of the instructor. 17. payment of the training fee should be made before each training session. 18. you should ensure
